CSA FAQ

  1. What is a CSA?

CSA or Community Supported Agriculture connects consumers with the farmer. It is a way to buy locally grown produce and know where your food is coming from. The produce usually reaches the members within a day of it being harvested. Underlying the CSA relationship is the agreement that the farmer and CSA members share the risks inherent in agriculture including failure due to drought, disease, etc.

  2. Is the Produce Organic?

Amaranth Acres is not certified organic but the produce is grown without the application of synthetic fertilizer or pesticides. In fact we are proud to say that our bar for growing these vegetables are even higher than the organic standard. We use sustainable practices that are good for the land and also the plants that grown in them.

  3. Do you grow all the vegetables at the farm?

Yes! All the vegetables offered through the CSA are grown here at the farm.

  4. What kind of shares are available?

We offer Regular share that provides an average of 6-8 items per week of organic vegetables during the peak season. The quantity is an average 8lbs per week. The season extends to 20-24 weeks or more. While the payment is made for a period of 20 weeks our season has extended to 24 weeks in the previous years. To see some of the vegetables you will get in your CSA share see gallery. Beginning of the season in Spring the quanity is less with greens and spring vegetables and the quanity and variety is more during the summer months.
The quantity is an indicator. This varies depedning on the vegetables we harvest during that week.

  5. How many people does a share serve?

The answer to this question is "It depends". It depends on how much vegetables your family normally eats. On average it should feed a family of 2 adults and 2 kids. If you think you will not cook all of the vegetables (see the next question) or share with friends and family so that they can also enjoy the benefit of farm fresh locally grown organic vegetables.

  6. How often do I get my CSA share?

The CSA shares are delivered once a week. The days and times are available in the CSA signup form for that year.

  7. What will I do with the excess vegetables in the share?

The excess vegetables can be frozen for the winter months. The good thing is most vegetables can be cut and frozen as is, the others can be frozen after blanching.

  8. Why is Amaranth Acres Unique?

We provide a good mix of Indian ethnic vegetables, greens and herbs. This should be a good opportunity as good quality organic, freshly picked ethnic vegetables is not very accessible.

  9. What happens to the surplus vegetables grown?

In some seasons we might have an excess of certain vegetables or some trial vegetables that will be sold through retail channels.
